    35 mins

How to cook fragrant basmati rice with peas and jeera? See below!

    1 person made this

    Serves: 4

    • 400ml water
    • 200g basmati rice
    • 50g fresh or frozen peas
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:25min  ›  Ready in:35min

    1. In a pan, combine water and rice, and bring to the boil. Stir well, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
    2. When rice is cooked, stir in peas and cumin. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes.

For an authentic dish, wash the rice before cooking to get rid of some of the starch. Put rice in a bowl and mix vigorously with water, then drain. Repeat this process five to seven times. Your rice will turn out fluffier and less starchy this way!

Consider dry-frying the cumin seeds in a cast iron frying pan for several minutes before adding to the rice. When you hear them "pop" they are ready. Heat the peas before adding to rice.  -  16 Mar 2006  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)

I find that it helps to soak the rice in a bowl of water first. Also, when cooking the rice (I usually just use my rice cooker), I like to add a cinnamon stick, 2 cloves, and a couple anise seeds to give it a more traditional flavor and great aroma!  -  05 Dec 2007  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
