Bina's Makha Dal

    Dal(lentil soup) is an everyday dish that is eaten with rice. I usually have dal at the end of a meal Makha Dal is special because of its thick gravy texture. It is a great pair with mango or tetul achar ( pickles). Some also like to have it with freshly squeezed lemon.

    Serves: 4 

    • 3 cups of dal
    • 1/2 of a big onion, sliced into think pieces
    • 2 tomatoes, sliced into thin pieces
    • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
    • Salt as needed
    • 1/3 of a teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • Water as needed for boiling the dal, approximately 8-10 cups
    • A few coriander leaves for garnishing
    • 2-3 green chillies, chopped for garnishing

    1. Wash the dal and set aside in a medium sized cooking pot .
    2. Add the sliced onions, tomatoes and garlic cloves to the cooking pot with the dal. Mix well with salt, turmeric powder and cooking oil.
    3. Fill this pot with water. The water should be around 8-10cups-just enough to fill the medium sized pot. Place the pot on stove with high heat for around 40-50 minutes until almost all of the water has dried up and the dal has softened.
    4. Serve with coriander leaves and chopped green chillies.
