Irina’s Dom Shemai

    1 hour 10 mins

Dom Shemai is a dessert often cooked on special religious holidays, such as Eid or Shab-e-Barat. It takes quite a bit of patience to make it as requires a lot of stirring. However, I think it is worth the effort because every spoonful of the shemai is a little piece of heaven :) It can be eaten warm or cold.

    1. Heat ghee on a pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon sticks and cardamoms.
    2. Break the dry shemai strands into small bits and add to the pan. Fry for 10-15 minutes on low heat.
    3. Add 1.5 cups of water. When bubbles form, sprinkle the sugar as the shemai is being stirred.
    4. In about 5 minutes the sugar will melt. Now add the grated coconut and stir for 2 minutes.

It tastes great when allowed to chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
