Gorur Gosht (beef curry)

    Gorur Gosht or beef curry is a common everyday dish in Bengal and South Asia. It is spicy, and is eaten with practically anything-rice, pulao, bread, rooti, paratha, loochi and biryani.

    Serves: 7 

    • 250 g of oil
    • 4 onions, sliced
    • 2 cardamoms
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 1 kg beef cubes
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon of red chilli powder
    • Salt as needed
    • 1 tablespoon of garlic paste
    • 1 tablespoon of ginger paste
    • 1 tablespoon of cumin paste
    • 1 tablespoon of red chilli paste
    • water as needed

    1. Heat oil and fry onions, cardamoms and cinnamon stick until the onions turn brown in color. Add the beef cubes and stir.
    2. Sprinkle turmeric and red chilli powders and salt. Stir and add garlic, ginger, cumin and red chilli pastes.
    3. Cook for around 20 minutes until the oil starts to simmer and float on top.
    4. Pour in 1-1.5 liters of hot boiling water.
    5. Lower the heat and put the lid on for around 40 minutes until the meat becomes tender, the water dries up to form a thick gravy and the oil starts to float on top.

    Serving suggestion

    Serve hot with plain white rice, pulao, biryani, ata rooti, parathas or loochi.
