Marinade the chicken pieces with onion, garlic and ginger pastes, salt and turmeric powder for 30 minutes.
Heat a pan with oil and add the marinated chicken, onion slices and chopped carrots. Stir and put the lid on. Cook on high heat for 20 minutes.
After a few minutes, add the chopped tomato and capsicum, cardamoms, cinnamon sticks and cloves. Also sprinkle the garam masala powder and stir well. Pour 2 cups of water and cook until the water dries up and oil starts to float on top on low heat. This would take around 30 minutes. Add the peas and stir well. Cook for a few more minutes
