Firnee or Rice Porridge

    Firnee is a traditional dessert item made with rice and milk. It is cooked on special occasions, such as Eid or parties. It is delicious by itself, but it is often served with loochis, parathas or tortillas.

    • 200 g of rice
    • 400 g of milk powder
    • 3 liters of water
    • 4-5 cinnamon sticks
    • 4-5 cardamoms
    • 200 g of sugar
    • 2 pinches of cinnamon powder
    • 1 tablespoon of sliced pistachio nuts


    1. Soak the rice in deep water for 2-3 hours.
    2. Strain the rice and keep aside.
    3. Mix the milk powder in 3 liters of water and bring it to boil on medium heat. Also add cinnamon sticks and cardamoms when the milk starts to thicken. Stir occasionally and the milk should be boiled in 5-8 minutes.
    4. Now add the rice slowly and stir continuously for at least 5 minutes.
    5. Let the mixture boil-this should take around 1 hour. Add the sugar and stir frequently.
    6. Remove the cinnamon sticks and cardamoms.
    7. The rice will be cooked by now and become mushy.
    8. Sprinkle the cinnamon powder when the porridge or firnee is ready.
    9. Pour it on a serving dish and decorate with sliced pistachio nuts.
    10. It can be served warm or chilled.
