Dal Pat Shak Curry

    This is a healthy vegetarian recipe of Pat Shak and Dal. Serve with plain rice or paratha.

    • 1.5 tablespoons of soybean oil
    • 1/2 cup of onion slices
    • 7-8 green chilies, sliced in half along the length
    • 1.5 cups of moong or boot dal, soaked for an hour or two
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • salt as needed
    • water as needed
    • 500 g of pat shak leaves (jute leaves)


    1. Heat a pan with oil and fry the onions and green chilies just slightly.
    2. Add the dal and stir.
    3. Sprinkle the turmeric, cumin and red chili powders and salt. Cook until the water released from the onions dries up and the oil starts to float on top.
    4. Put the lid on and add 1/2 cup of water. Cook for 5 minutes.
    5. Take the lid out and add the shak leaves. Stir and mix well.
    6. Cook with the lid on for 10 minutes.
    7. A distinct flavorful smell will come out.
    8. The dish is ready. Serve with plain white rice or roti.
