Loitta mach bhaji (Loitta Fish Fry)

    This is a spicy traditional Bengali fish curry. Serve with plain white rice.

    • 500 g of Loittta fish pieces
    • 1 teaspoon of ginger paste
    • 2 teaspoons of garlic paste
    • 2 teaspoons of onion paste
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
    • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
    • salt as needed
    • 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder
    • 1 cup of biscuit crumbs
    • Oil as needed
    • 2 eggs, beaten well


    1. Wash the loitta fish pieces and mix well with ginger, garlic and onion pastes, turmeric, red chili, coriander and cumin powders and salt. Also mix in the black pepper powder. Set aside for 1 hour.
    2. Pour the biscuit crumbs in a tray and set aside.
    3. Heat a pan with soybean oil.
    4. Dip each fish piece in the beaten egg and roll on the tray with the biscuit crumbs.
    5. Add this fish to the hot bubbling oil and deep fry until it turns slightly red.
    6. Repeat for the rest of the fish pieces
    7. Serve with rice or pulao.
