Chingri Kochu Bhorta (Shrimp Yam Mash)

About this recipe: Chingri Kochu Bhorta is a traditional mash item in Bengali cuisine. It is spicy and of course yummy. Serve with plain rice.

  • 1 teaspoon of soybean oil
  • 1/2 cup of shrimps
  • 1 cup of boiled yam (kochu), pealed and cubed
  • 1/2 cup of onion slices
  • 6 green chilies, cut in half along the length
  • salt as needed
  • 1.5 tablespoons of mustard oil


  1. Heat a pan with soybean oil. Fry the shrimps until they turn golden red.
  2. Mash the shrimps or chingri in a sheel pata or a blender.
  3. Also mash the boiled kochu or taro.
  4. Mix the mashed shrimps and taro in a bowl. Also add the onion slices, green chilies and salt until the onions become soft.
  5. Add the mustard oil and mix again.
  6. Serve with steaming white rice.
