Chalkumra Halwa (Ash gourd halwa)

    Ash gourd or chalkumra is one of those ingredients that can be paired up with almost anything to create delicious food items. This is a simple recipe for halwa that is often made on Shab-e-barat. Enjoy with roti, paratha or loochis.

    • 1/2 of a big chalkumra (ash gourd)
    • 1.5 cups of water
    • 4 cardamoms
    • 4 cinnamon sticks
    • 4 cloves
    • 3 bay leaves
    • 2-2.5 cups of sugar
    • 1 handful of nuts and raisins ( as preferred or 2 tablespoons)


    1. Cut the chalkumra, peel its skin and remove the seeds.
    2. Boil the chalkumra in water.
    3. Grind the boiled chalkumra in a sheel pata.
    4. Heat a saucepan with ghee. Add the pasted chalkumra. Stir and add the sugar continuously.
    5. Sprinkle the cardamoms, cinnamon sticks, cloves and bay leaves. Stir and cook for 2-3 hours on low heat. Stir regularly every now and then.
    6. When the halwa has hardened, transfer it on a dish.
    7. Garnish with nuts and raisins.
