Plain Lal Shak bhaji (Red Amaranth Fry)

    This is a very common and popular dish of lal shak or red amaranth fry. It is a favorite among kids because they love the red coloration that rice takes when the shak is mixed with it.

    • 1 kg lal shak
    • 1/2 cup of soybean oil
    • 1 teaspoon of garlic slices
    • 1 tablespoon of onion slices
    • salt as needed
    • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder


    1. Wash the lal shak, and cut into small slices. Drain the water out.
    2. Heat soybean oil in a pan and fry the onions and garlic slices, salt, turmeric, red chili and coriander powders for a bit.
    3. Add the sliced lal shak and stir. Cook with lid on for 10 minutes until the shak reduces to half its amount and become soft.
