Kathaler Bichi diye Churi Shutki Bhaji

    This is a very spicy dish of dried fish and jackfruit seeds. It is very popular in Chittagong district of Bangladesh. Serve with plain white rice.

    • 10-12 jack fruit seeds, peeled and soaked in water
    • 1/2 cup of small sized shutki slices
    • 1/2 cup of soybean oil
    • 1 cup of garlic slices
    • 1 cup of onion slices
    • salt as needed
    • 1/2 tablespoon of red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 2 cups of water
    • 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves
    • 4-5 green chilies


    1. Cut the jackfruit seeds in half to make slices.
    2. Soak the shutki pieces in warm water. Take the middle bone out when the shutki has softened. Wash the shutki pieces with warm water.
    3. Heat a pan with oil. Add the shutki pieces and garlic slices. Stir and fry.
    4. Add the onion slices and sprinkle the salt.
    5. Add the jackfruit slices. Continue to stir.
    6. Mix in the red chili and turmeric powders. Cook until the water released dries up and oil starts to simmer.
    7. Pour in 2 cups of water and cook with lid on. Sprinkle the coriander leaves and green chilis.
    8. The dish will be ready when a thick gravy forms and oil floats on top. Serve with plain white rice.
