Pui Shak Kathaler Bichir Curry (Malabar Spinach and Jackfruit Seeds Curry)

    This is a delicious vegetarian dish that is spicy and is served with plain rice. The subtle sweetness and creaminess of the jack fruits make this dish quite unique.

    • 1-2 tablespoons of soybean oil
    • 1 tablespoon of ginger paste
    • 1 tablespoon of garlic paste
    • 1 tablespoon of onion paste
    • 1/2 cup of onions
    • salt as needed
    • 1 cup of small shrimps, washed
    • 1 cup of jackfruit seeds, peeled, washed and each sliced in half
    • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder
    • 1/2 of pui shak, washed and sliced
    • 4-5 green chilies


    1. Heat a pan with the oil. Add the ginger, garlic and onion pastes, onion slices and salt. Stir and cook until the water released dries up a bit and the oil simmers on top.
    2. Add the shrimps, jackfruit seeds and turmeric, red chili and coriander powders.
    3. Cook until the seeds have softened and boiled. Add the pui shak leaves and stir and cook with lid on 10-15 minutes.
    4. By now the leaves will soften, boil and become completely mixed with the seeds and shrimps. A distinct smell of the leaves will come out as well. The water should have dried up a bit to make thick gravy.
    5. Sprinkle green chilies and stir.
    6. Serve with plain rice.
