Shrimp in Yam or Colocasia (Chingri Mach e Kochur Mukhi)

About this recipe: This is a typical Bengali side dish that is slightly mushy, very spicy and flavorful. It is served with plain white rice.

  • 3 tablespoon of soybean oil
  • 1 tablespoon of onion slices
  • salt as needed
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teapsoon of red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic paste
  • 100 g of small sized shrimps
  • 1 cup of peeled and diced yam or colocasia ( kochu)
  • 4 chopped green chilies


  1. Heat a pan with oil. Add the onions, salt, turmeric and red chili powders, ginger and garlic pastes and cook until the water from the pastes dry up to form a thick gravy.
  2. Add the shrimps. Fry for a bit.
  3. Now add the diced yams and pour in 2 cups of hot water. Stir and cook until the yams become soft and a thick gravy forms. Sprinkle the green chilies and serve.
