    About this recipe: As the name suggests, this is a recipe for very spicy khichadi ( a rice and dal main dish). The spiciness, however, is perfectly balanced with sweet grated coconut and toasted peanuts. Serve with pickles.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 5 

    • 4 tablespoons grated coconut
    • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
    • 2 tablespoons soybean oil
    • 2 tablespoons chopped onions
    • 2 tablespoons chopped tomatoes
    • 1 tablespoon toasted peanuts
    • 1 teaspoon haldi
    • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon garam masala
    • 3 cups rice ( like basmati)
    • 1 cup tur dal
    • 5 cups water
    • salt as needed

    Directions

    1. Make a fine paste of coconut and ginger garlic paste in a bowl.
    2. Heat a pan with soybean oil. Add the coconut and ginger garlic paste, chopped onions and tomatoes. Stir and add toasted peanuts. Fry the ingredients for 5 minutes.
    3. Sprinkle haldi, red chili and garam masala powders. Stir and mix well.
    4. Add rice and tur dal. Stir and mix and pour in 5 cups of water. Sprinkle salt and cook for 20 minutes.
    5. Serve with curry dishes and achar (pickle).
