About this recipe: Soft khichadi is a comforting dal and rice based meal that is flavored with warm ghee. It is delicious by itself, but if you want, you can have achar or scrambled eggs with it.

Serves: 5 

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 tablespoons chopped onions
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon haldi powder
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 4 cups basmati rice
  • 1 cup moong dal
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 3-4 green chilies, chopped

  1. Heat a pan with oil. Add cumin seeds, chopped onions, red chili and haldi powders and curry leaves. Stir and sprinkle salt.
  2. Add washed basmati rice and moong dal to the pan. Pour in 8 cups of water. Cook until the rice and dal gets boiled and that the dal becomes soft and liquid like.
  3. The khichadi will be soft and a bit watery, but not dry. When the khichadi is almost cooked, sprinkle coriander leaves, stir in ghee and cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Garnish with green chilies.
