About this recipe: Khichada is a traditional dish that is said to have originated from the Mughal period. For those who are familiar with most south Asian dishes, it is very much similar to Haleem. It is thick and is often cooked with meat. However, the following recipe is the vegetarian version of Khichada.

Serves: 4 

  • 2 tablespoons soybean oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4 red chilies
  • 1 teaspoon haldi
  • 3 cups rice
  • 1 cup moong dal
  • 6 cups water
  • 2 chopped onions
  • salt as needed

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin and red chilies. Stir and then add haldi.
  2. After that add rice, dal and water and stir. Spread onions and cook for 20 min. Sprinkle salt, stir and mix. Serve.
