About this recipe: It is a great Maharashtrian style daal that is served with plain rice. I personally enjoyed having it with roti as well.

Serves: 4 

  • 2 cups tur dal
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons grated dry coconut
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 2 tablespoons soybean oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon haldi powder
  • 2 teaspoons red chilly powder
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala powder
  • 2 red chilies
  • salt as needed

  1. Boil tur dal in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes with 2 cups of water. Meanwhile, mix coconut and garlic paste, and grind.
  2. Heat a pan with the oil, add cumin seeds and ground coconut and garlic paste . Stir and fry for 2 minutes.
  3. Now sprinkle haldi and red chili powders and garam masala powders. Mix well, and add red chilies. Add cooked tur dal. Sprinkle salt and the ingredients for 5 minutes.
