Mugachi amati (Moong Dal)

About this recipe: Mugachi Amati is the Maharashtrian version of moong dal. Enjoy it with rice and pickles.

Serves: 3 

  • 2 cups green moong dal
  • water as needed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4 tablespoons chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons coconut and garlic paste
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • salt as needed

  1. Cook moong dal in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes with 1.5 cups of water.
  2. Heat a pan with vegetable oil, add cumin seeds, onions and tomatoes. Fry until onions turn brown.
  3. Now add coconut paste. Stir and add red chili powder, haldi powder and salt.
  4. Then add green moong and 1 cup of water water. Cook for for 2-5 minutes.
