About this recipe: This is a dry and spicy dish, but it is full of flavors. It is a very famous food in Chittagong, the southern part of Bangladesh. Serve with steaming rice or pulao.

Serves: 4 

  • 100 g chanda mach shutki/ chanda dried fish slices
  • 7-8 big garlic cloves
  • 6-7 green chillies
  • 1 bundle data shak/bari danta, sliced
  • 1 medium sized eggplant, sliced
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • Salt as needed
  • Water as needed

  1. Flatten the shutki with a rolling pin or a hammer just slightly. Repeat for the garlic and green chillies.
  2. In a saucepan, add data shak/bari danta, eggplants, turmeric and red chilli powders, salt and 1/2 cup of water.
  3. Turn on the heat and allow to cook with the lid on.
  4. When the water has dried up a bit, add the flattened shutki, garlic and green chillies. Stir and cook with lid on.
  5. When the water has completely dried out, turn off the heat and serve.
