About this recipe: Chopped dates baked with a mixture of atta, oats and vanilla. It just crumbles in your mouth and goes beautifully with coffee.


Serves: 8 

  • Filling
  • 150g chopped dates
  • 60ml cold water
  • 25g sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • Crumble
  • 175g self-raising flour
  • 150g margarine
  • 100g oats
  • 150g sugar

  1. Heat oven to 180 C. Grease a large square tin.
  2. Place all filling ingredients in pan, and heat gently until mixture forms paste. Add more water if required. Leave mixture to cool.
  3. Rub margarine into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in oats and sugar, and mix well. place half the crumble mixture into the greased tray. Press down firmly. Smooth filling evenly over. Leave a small gap to the edge of tin. Spread remaining crumble evenly over the top.
  4. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes until golden brown.
