Quick Donuts

    Atta, butter and sugar rolled into warm, moist goodness that melts in your mouth! I discovered this recipe 15 years ago and it's still going strong.

    Serves: 6 

    • 70g butter
    • 500g plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 70g sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 260ml milk
    • vegetable oil for frying

    Prep:15min  ›  Cook:5min  ›  Ready in:20min 

    1. Sieve flour and baking powder into a bowl and rub in butter. Mix in the sugar.
    2. Beat egg and milk together. Make a well in flour mixture, then and pour in the egg mixture. Mix together to form a soft dough.
    3. Roll out dough on a well floured surface to about 1cm (1/2 in) thick and cut to shape of choice. Personally I use 2 different sized biscuit cutters.
    4. Fry in hot oil (at approximately 180 degrees C) for 30 seconds, turn over and cook for a further 30 seconds untill golden brown.
    5. Drain on kitchen paper until cool. Roll in sugar or decorate with icing as desired.

    We are a brother and sister duo. We were both at home today and wanted to make something delicious for our family of 4 and dog. Let me take this moment to point out that my brother is only 8 years old. Now, we decided on donuts. We found and followed your recipe to the letter. My brother was the first to eat it. He , being enthusiastic, ate a few, then made a face and said he could not eat any more. I then tasted one and it tasted like an under cooked chocolate paratha. We really hit the jackpot though, when our father tasted one. He promptly spat it out, said it was a roti , and then insulted us some more. Then he made me wash dishes, proclaiming it a waste of good money. We do not have the courage to make our mother taste one, lest she disown us. On the brighter side, our dog ate all the donuts that by now, everyone had deemed unfit for human consumption. So, I think it would not be out of place here, to suggest that you not torture any other family thus. Thankyou.  -  08 Nov 2013
