About this recipe: This is a savoury dish that tastes excellent with rice or poori. When combined with puri and halwa, it's also traditionally served for ashtmi during navaratri. That's when little girls are invited home and are worshipped like the devi.

Serves: 3 

  • 1/2 lb kaale channe
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 tomatoe finely chopped
  • 3 tsp vegetable oil
  • 3 tsp ginger paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cloves
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp rai
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 2 sprigs coriander leaves
  • salt to taste

Prep:5min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Extra time:6hr soaking  ›  Ready in:6hr35min 

  1. Soak th channa for 6 hrs and then cook it in the pressure cooker for 15 mins with cloves and cinnamon stick.
  2. While the channa is boiling, place the rest of the ingredients in oil and saute for 5 mins until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Place the above mixture into the boiled channa.
  4. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
