About this recipe: For new cooks, here's an easy recipe on how to make rice with peas. No longer calling mom to ask how much water to use! This is simple comfort food at its best. I love it with raita or ghee on top.

Serves: 4 

  • 400ml water
  • 200g basmati rice
  • 50g fresh or frozen peas
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  1. Soak rice in water for 10 mins. Drain and fill water again 3-4 times or till the water runs clear. In a pan, combine water and rice, and bring to the boil. Stir well, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. When rice is cooked, stir in peas and cumin. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes.


For an authentic dish, wash the rice before cooking to get rid of some of the starch. Put rice in a bowl and mix vigorously with water, then drain. Repeat this process five to seven times. Your rice will turn out fluffier and less starchy this way!
