Fish Curry Meen Pattichathu

    As there are varieties for fish curries avaiable. This is one of the traditional Kerala Red fish curry which can be served with rice or chappathi or kappa. I am using Gambooge(Brindleberry, Brindall berry, Malabar tamarind, Kodumpuli). Some of them use tamarind/tomato/raw mango instead of gambooge.

    • 600 gms Seer Fish curry pieces
    • 2 tablespoon Fish masala powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
    • 3 Slit Green Chillies
    • 1/2 teaspoon Ginger Garlic Paste
    • 3 Shallots
    • 2 sprig Curry Leaves
    • 1 tablespoon Cocunut oil
    • 2 Gambooge
    • as required water
    • Mustard
    • for taste Salt

    1. Soak gambooge in water.
    2. Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds.
    3. Add shallots, ginger garlic paste and green chillies. fry untill it becomes light brown.
    4. when the shallots turns light brown add turmeric powder and fish masala powder(i used eastern fish malasa). keep it for a while.
    5. Add 1 cup water and salt.
    6. When the gravy starts boiling, add the fish pieces and gambooge.
    7. Cover the kadai and cook on gentle heat for around 10 minutes.


    While washing the fish, add some turmeric powder.
