About this recipe:Mustard Ilish (Hilsa) with tamarind flavor has a spicy, sweet and sour taste. Hilsa is considered the national fish in Bangladesh, and is cooked in various different ways. This recipe tastes great with steaming plain white rice.
Cover the fish pieces with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Set aside on a bowl.
Heat a frying pan with the soya bean oil and fry the fish pieces. Set aside the fried fish pieces.
Now on a separate pan, heat the mustard oil. Add the dry red chillies, mustard seeds, tomato cubes, turmeric powder, tomato paste, ginger, garlic and mustard pastes, sugar, salt and 1 cup of water. Stir and mix the spices well. Cook until the water dries up and the oil starts to simmer on top.
Pour the tamarind extract and sprinkle the red chilli powder. Add the fish pieces and stir well, reversing each sides of the fish pieces so that the curry sauce and spices enter into the fish pieces.
Now pour the milk all over the fish pieces and turn the heat down. Cook for a bit until the water dries up slightly for 15-20 minutes.
