Rui Mach er Murighonto (Rui Fish Murighonto)

    This is a very tasty traditional Bengali fish and dal based dish served with plain rice.

    • 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
    • 2-3 bay leaves
    • 2 tablespoons of onion paste
    • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin paste
    • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of ginger paste
    • Salt as needed
    • 1 rui fish head, washed and cleaned
    • Water as needed
    • 2 cups of moong dal
    • 4-5 green chilies
    • Just a pinch of toasted cumin seeds powder


    1. Heat a pan with oil and add bay leaves, onion paste, cumin paste, red chili and turmeric powders, just a bit of the ginger paste and salt. Stir and mix well.
    2. Add the fish head with a bit of water. Cook until the water dries up and the oil starts to float on top
    3. In a separate pan, fry the moong dal with oil. Add 1 cup of water and allow the dal to get boiled.
    4. Add the boiled dal to the fried fish head and cook until the water dries up and the oil starts to float on top.
    5. Add a bit of water again and sprinkle the green chilies. Stir well.
    6. Sprinkle the cumin powder and stir again right before the dish is served
