Dal Chinchinga (Dal Snake Gourd Curry)

    Dal chichinga is a simple yet healthy curry that is served with plain white rice. It is a traditional food item and is quite simple to make. Serve with rice or roti.

    • 1 tablespoon of soybean oil
    • 1/2 cup of onion slices
    • 2 tablespoons of garlic slices
    • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder
    • 1/2 cup of masoor dal, soaked for an hour or so
    • Water as needed
    • 2 cups of chichinga or snake gourd, pealed and sliced


    1. Heat a pan with soybean oil. Fry the onion and garlic slices with some salt.
    2. Sprinkle the turmeric, red chili and coriander powders. Stir well.
    3. Add the masoor dal, stir and cook for 5 minutes until the water released from the dal dries up and the oil starts to simmer on top.
    4. Pour in 1/2 cup of water and cook with lid on for 2 more minutes.
    5. Remove the lid and add the chichinga or snake gourd slices. Mix the slices well with the dal.
    6. Cook for 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
    7. Serve with plain white rice.
