Chotpoti is a spicy street snack served with sweet and sour tamarind sauce. It is delicious by itself, and is very popular to youngsters.

    • 250 g of motor dal (split peas)
    • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
    • ½ teaspoon of food soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder
    • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
    • salt as needed
    • 1 egg
    • 2 potatoes
    • 1 tablespoon of tamarind pieces
    • water as needed
    • 3-4 toasted dry red chilies, grounded to make 1 tablespoon of flakes
    • 1 teaspoon of sugar
    • 1 onion, sliced
    • 1 teaspoon of chopped coriander leaves
    • 3-4 green chilies, chopped


    1. Soak the motor dal for 4-5 hours. Wash the dal and boil it with the food soda.
    2. Add the turmeric, red chili and coriander powders. Also sprinkle just 1/2 teaspoon of the cumin powder and salt. . Cook until you can see that the spices have mixed well and the water has dried up a bit.
    3. In a separate saucepan, boil the egg and the potatoes.
    4. Mix the tamarind pieces with 1-2 tablespoons of water. Soak and squeeze the extract out on a sieve and collect in a bowl. Mix in the toasted dried red chili flakes, sugar and a pinch of salt.
    5. Grate the hardboiled egg, peel the skin of the potatoes and grate them as well.
    6. In a bowl, mix the cooked dal with the onion slices, coriander leaves and green chili slices.
    7. Sprinkle the grated eggs and potatoes.
    8. Finally sprinkle the tamarind sauce and serve.
