3-4 toasted dry red chilies, grounded to make 1 tablespoon of flakes
1 teaspoon of sugar
1 onion, sliced
1 teaspoon of chopped coriander leaves
3-4 green chilies, chopped
Soak the motor dal for 4-5 hours. Wash the dal and boil it with the food soda.
Add the turmeric, red chili and coriander powders. Also sprinkle just 1/2 teaspoon of the cumin powder and salt. . Cook until you can see that the spices have mixed well and the water has dried up a bit.
In a separate saucepan, boil the egg and the potatoes.
Mix the tamarind pieces with 1-2 tablespoons of water. Soak and squeeze the extract out on a sieve and collect in a bowl. Mix in the toasted dried red chili flakes, sugar and a pinch of salt.
Grate the hardboiled egg, peel the skin of the potatoes and grate them as well.
In a bowl, mix the cooked dal with the onion slices, coriander leaves and green chili slices.
