Diet Bread Pakora/Fritters Without Deepfrying

    Bread Pakora/Fritters is every ones favorite and if you are in India you can’t stay away from them.Twisting the ingredients a bit, here we would be mixing some Rava/Semolina to Besan/Gram flour to make them crispier. I have added some Hing/Asafoetida to make them digestible as we all know Asafoetida is great for digestion. Also instead of white bread, use whole wheat bread this will make your Bread Fitters healthy. I further made them healthy, changing the cooking technique. If you have a Airfryer you can make these in it but if you don’t, you need not worry. Instead of deep frying the fitters, just cook them greasing some Olive oil on a flat pan the way you make uttapam or dosa. This technique will result healthier oil free fritters.

    • 1 cup besan/bengal gram flour
    • ½ cup semolina
    • 1 medium onion, Sliced thinly
    • 2-3 green chili (or more as per taste)
    • ¼ cup coriander leaves
    • 1 tbs fennel seeds/Saunf
    • 1 tbs carom seeds /Ajwain
    • ½ tbs cumin powder
    • 1 pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
    • 1 tbs red chili (optional)
    • ½ tbs turmeric powder
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 ½ cup Water (or more)
    • Whole wheat bread, 4 slices
    • 3-4 tbs olive oil
    • Chat masala for sprinkle


    1. Take the bread slices and cut them in 4 halves
    2. Now take a deep bowl, mix besan/bengal gram flour, semolina, onion, green chili, coriander leaves, fennel seeds/Saunf, carom seeds /Ajwain, cumin powder, Asafoetida/Hing, red chili (optional), turmeric powder and salt.
    3. Pour water and mix well to make a smooth batter
    4. The batter should not be too thick and too flowy, maintain the consistency
    5. Now grease a non-stick flat pan with olive oil and let it heat
    6. Dip the squares of bread in the batter and place on the pan one by one
    7. Let them cook nicely till crisp, if required put some drops of oil towards the edges
    8. Flip them and let them cook from other side
    9. Once all the squares are done. Serve your diet Bread Pakora/Fritters hot.
    10. Sprinkle some chaat masala over or serve with green chutney or your favorite tomato sauce.
