Kathal Pulao


    It is slightly spiced and delicately flavored vegetarian biryani made with jakcfruit or kathal. Unripe jackfruit is also known as vegetarian meat. When cooked it has a soft meat like texture and hence this biryani is pretty prevalent in India. You can serve it with raita, pickle and papad.

    • 1 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1 cup onions finely chopped
    • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
    • 1/2 kg peeled, sliced and deep fried kathal /jackfruit
    • Salt as per taste
    • 1/2 tsp chilli powder or to taste
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tsp coriander powder
    • 1/2 tsp garam masala
    • 1 tsp green chillies-finely chopped
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • 1 cup rice-almost cooked
    • 1/2 cup coriander leaves
    • 2 Tbsp oil


    1. Heat oil and add cumin seeds.
    2. Add the onions, garlic-ginger paste. Saute till golden brown.
    3. Add fried kathal, over low heat.
    4. Add salt, chilli powder, haldi, coriander powder, garam masala and green chillies. Add ½- 1 cup of water.
    5. Cook, covered for about7-10 minutes. The water should be absorbed and the gravy should be considerably thick by now. Add lemon juice and half the coriander.
    6. Spread a layer of half the rice in a microwave safe bowl. Add jackfruit gravy. Add another layer of the rice above it. Cover with the rest of the jackfruit gravy and the rice again.
    7. Microwave it for 2-3 minutes and serve garnished with the coriander.
