About this recipe: While teaching English in Asia the past several years, I've been lucky to exchange some delicious and authentic recipes with local people. This Vietnamese Sandwich, or Banh Mi, is brilliant and it is a nice break from common sandwiches. Use garlic chilli sauce but Indonesian sambal or Korean chilli paste can also be substituted. This is an authentic recipe of French influenced Vietnamese cuisine.


Serves: 4 

  • 4 boneless pork loin chops, cut 6mm thick, may use boneless chicken breast meat instead
  • 4 hot dog buns, split lengthways
  • 4 teaspoons mayonnaise, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chilli sauce with garlic
  • 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 small red onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 medium cucumber, peeled and sliced lengthways
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
  • salt and pepper to taste

  1. Cook the meat slices on the tawa. They should be browned on each side. Keep them moist and don't let them dry out.
  2. Open the hot dog rolls and spread mayonnaise on the insides. Place one of the cooked meat pieces into each roll. Spread chilli sauce directly on the meat. Sprinkle with a little lime juice and top with slices of onion, cucumber, coriander, salt and pepper. Finish with another quick drizzle of lime juice.
